Amsterdam Airport Schiphol operates with six runways - and this is mainly due to safety reasons. Because wind direction often changes in the Netherlands, Schiphol had to come up with a 'tangential runway system' which makes it safe for planes to land and take off regardless of which direction the wind blows.

Transport Information

There are a lot of travel options both for locals and tourists in Amsterdam Airport. One of the most reliable modes of transport is the train. You can find them in platforms 1, 2, and 3 at the same floor below the airport terminal. These trains, which leave every 10 to 15 minutes, will take you to the Amsterdam train station within 15-20 minutes. Buses are also a cheap alternative, especially if you're staying at a hotel near a bus station. Buses at the airport leave every 30 minutes and usually make five stops which are conveniently located near many hotels. You should take note, though, that they have limited availability during weekends. If you have a lot of luggage with you, the most convenient mode of transport would be a taxi or a rental car as these will bring you directly to your hotel.
